This ad didn’t sit well with me, either. You’ve definitely elucidated one aspect of why, but also, I just think these people are actors (or acting). When the “feminists hate men” guy says, “Smash the patriarchy” at the end, it sounded to me more like a sarcastic dickhead, not a “yay I’m now a feminist too!” statement.

when i saw this, all i could think for the transgender rights one was: what if they had put a black guy and a member of the klan up in there? How would that have worked out?

Trying to imagine if they had a Jew whose family was all murdered in the Holocaust, and a Holocaust denier.

I think what bothered me the most about this ad (other than the simple fact that I hate ads in general) was how uneven the choices were. Woman who believes she deserves equal rights w/ a guy who denies her equality. Trans woman w/ a guy who believes trans people should just live out their lives in silent denial.

I love how I took pains to spell impugning right, and then misspell AS!

“I mean if you’re nice enough you might convince someone that you deserve to exist! Isn’t that great?”

I’m a grey, but I had to say... this ad made me anxious and fearful. Like I was worried that the anti trans dude and the alt right skinhead guy are dangerous. These people are potentially dangerous, and I don’t want to see them do ice breakers and team builders with the people their view HURT AND KILL.

Thank you. I couldn’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t as impressed by this as others seemed to be. You summed it up nicely.

As an actual fucking researcher, this “experiment” would not get by any ethics committee because 1. there’s no informed consent and 2. They are literally playing videos of people saying that trans people should not exist in front of a trans person. At best, it’s irresponsible research, at worse, it’s... well... this

Privilege is being able to joke about walking away without thinking about it.

This ad got so much praise and I kept thinking why is the onus on the marginalized to have a beer with a bigot?

“the trans woman is required to ingratiate herself to the bigot, but not the other way around” — I didn’t even pick up on that when I first watched it, but this is very true.

They didn’t show the bridge building experiments that didn’t end up with both people having a beer together...

YUP. I keep hearing that Trump voters were REALLY worried about economic uncertainty, and yet all of the MAGA fans in my family were the ones who posted incessant racist memes about Obama for the past eight years and who called Hillary supporters “gay communists.”

Plus they could have put her in serious danger depending on how unhinged the antitrans person is.

I saw the ad. If it was me? I would have left the anti trans bigot at the bar by himself. I am not sitting down and smiling with a guy that thinks I shouldn’t exist. I don’t have to pander to some bigots feelings either.

Yes! And it really shows how little we care about women and LGBT folks. Can you imagine if the ad had a racist guy and a black guy? Because that’s essentially what it was. The anti-trans guy was like “trans people shouldn’t exist, it’s wrong, it’s against nature!” That is no different, to me, than saying black people

I saw this ad last night, and my SO was gushing over it. I had the completely opposite reaction: I think the ad is bullshit.

THANK YOU. The same people I saw bitching about Pepsi are sharing this ad like, “WOW HOW AMAZING THANKS GENERIC BEER COMPANY” and I found it to be really grotesque

YES that false equivalent shit. Drove me bananas after the election -- maybe we need to sit and listen to trump supporters, find out what they’re feeling and what they’re really angry about. BITCHES VOTED FOR A RACIST I THINK I KNOW WHAT THEY’RE FEELING JUST FINE.
