Permethrin is not as effective against mosquitoes as DEET. It is, however, the gold standard against ticks! So the best way to protect yourself from both is to use both.

It’s not that they are ignoring that, it’s just that it takes longer to figure out. It’s much easier to tell whether or not people are getting really sick than to tell whether or not they are spreading the virus.

FYI, probably they don’t realize that, since the comment was posted in 2011 when this article was new.

This is definitely a thing in social science. People sometimes have weird experiences, and we generally interpret those experiences based on what we are culturally prepared to expect.

I’m in a line of work where people sometimes will come to me with these kinds of concerns. There are people who will find this useful. Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, people definitely have odd experiences. Even if the ghosts aren’t real, real people are helped by being able to access this information.

Minnesota changed the speed limit for most rural highways from 55 to 60 over a year ago. Google Maps still shows it as 55. If you mostly drive on rural roads, you run into this no matter what service you use.

In my area, GPS apps frequently have the wrong speed limit.

Google hasn’t updated the speed limit on some roads in my area that are now 60 mph instead of 55. It's been months! I assume my insurance company would have the wrong speed limit for most rural roads.

I’ve always assumed that the whole point of this is to create an excuse to charge more. Otherwise, what’s in it for them? They’re counting on you thinking you’re an above-average driver, but by definition, half of drivers are average or below.

If you move far enough from the city, you may also find yourself having to pay more in order to get less when it comes to utilities like internet.

Thanks. I’ll look into Memento. Encircle doesn’t seem to have any way to “nest” items (like to group together the contents of a box), which is one of the things I liked about Sortly. (It's so frustrating that they decided to stop supporting home users, because it's got exactly the features I want.) I want to use it to

Are there any actually halfway decent apps that don't require iOS, now that Sortly is $40/month?

Why is getting more people on the escalator at one time considered a benefit?

In most cases, there is not a line of people waiting to get on the standing side. There is no bottleneck. Everyone who wants to stand can already just get on the escalator right away. And people who want to walk can also do that.

I live in Minnesota, just a couple of hours from where 5G is supposed to come out first. I can’t reliably get 4G in my area. I can mostly get 3G.

Verizon is the only network that really works in my area, and they seem to have given up on improving service outside of the major metro areas. This does not make me

It doesn’t necessarily have to be one guy who always does it, either (although that is the scenario discussed in this particular article). It can be cumulative—if you always get these kinds of replies to all of your posts, it’s just as exhausting as having one guy who does it consistently.

Getting the “reply guys” to change their behavior is not the only reason you talk about something like this. You also do it because it supports and empowers folks who have long been frustrated with this sort of behavior, but couldn’t articulate why it was so exhausting, or felt alone in experiencing it.

Being able to

FYI, this is sort of the 10th honorary way to be a “reply guy” — pretending to reply like a “reply guy” but as a joke so it’s okay. It’s not that it’s bad in and of itself, per se, but it’s so predictable it doesn’t really contribute anything.

Is this an online-only thing? I once saw an empty display for these in a store, but I’ve never seen one actually for sale.

You can buy bridesmaids’ dresses in any color, including white and ivory, for a lot cheaper than a basically identical dress sold as a wedding gown. And you can still get all the same fitting services!

Just the fact that it’s a wedding gown inflates the price substantially, but people have more of a realistic budget

This is all completely irrelevant if you can’t even get consistent cell service at your house. In my area, many people still have to use their terrible slow expensive Internet just to supplement their cellular signal!
