and proper medical care will be provided as needed.

I’d settle for a more realistic proportion of false accusations. Like, if you want to include a false accusation of rape in your police procedural, you must first do at least nine equally central storylines in which the accusation is not false.

I actually do see random packs of kids in my town, all the time. (Today, even. No school today.) But the whole town is probably not as big as a proper-sized city block. We laugh at what other people think of as “rural”.

It’s nice to see a makeup ad that appears to be targeting women, not straight men. I look at that ad and I see someone that I, a woman, want to be. Not someone that some man wants me to be. More advertising that is ostensibly aimed at women should be like this.

If “believe women” actually meant anything, no one would have been surprised when that “shocking” recording was released.

Wait, are you implying that Trump’s misdeeds were revealed only after he was nominated?

Is that a real snake? How do snakes feel about being used as fashion accessories?

(I am generally opposed to anything that encourages people to associate with pythons, because that’s where all the escaped pythons come from. Wild pythons in their natural habitat are fine. Escaped pythons in the park are terrifying.)

I now expect, when I hear about an attack, to find out that the attacker was (a) male and (b) recently rejected (in his opinion) by a woman.

The common denominator isn’t religion, or mental illness. It’s men. Men who feel that they are entitled to women.

My first guess was that it was her “rejection” (possibly for very good reasons, not that it matters) that “triggered” the attack.

It’s a common theme in random attacks: Man rejected by a woman; lashes out and hurts lots of people who had nothing to do with it.

In most (all, for all I know) places crimes against women are not legally considered hate crimes, as women are not a protected class under most hate crime legislation.

So, it’s not this report’s fault, at least. Which doesn’t really make it a lot better.

the report’s finding that hate crimes against all other groups barely
fluctuated, except for one

Jokes aside, having known a few people over 100 years old, I find that part quite plausible. It’s entirely possible that everyone who knew he missed his Bar Mitzvah is long gone. He may have been embarrassed about it or just didn’t want to make a fuss, and so he never told anyone until it happened to come up recently.

Is it horrible that my first reaction was that they should do this today, not next month, because he’s 113?

They realize that hourglasses are designed to be flipped over again, right? This is not the scary “your time is running out” image they were looking for.

The linked article answers some of these questions. In particular:

You’re older than me, but I bet your weight is healthier. I’m so skinny everything hits me like a ton of bricks.

We may be talking past each other here to some extent. “Pneumonia” covers a variety of related illnesses that are caused by different things. Last year I had pneumonia (and bronchitis at the same time,

Pneumonia is a serious illness because it should be taken seriously, not because it’s likely to kill an otherwise healthy adult woman in her 60s. 60s is not that old.

FWIW, what counts as a species and what counts as a sub-species is highly subjective, so this doesn’t necessarily represent any new information.
One of the distinctions is that different species typically don’t interbreed, but when the geographic ranges are different, you don’t actually know if they would interbreed

Thanks for this. I was sure I already knew this, but I thought maybe I was confusedly remembering the different sub-species.

Nope, I totally already knew this. (To be fair, this is only because I was trying to label the species I saw, not because I am all that interested in studying giraffes.)

It’s because I don’t want that to happen to other people that I bring this up. There are real alcoholics who do not consume more than 2-3 drinks a day. Alcoholism still has real, sometimes devastating, effects on their lives.
