I love birds, and they are often a lot tougher than they look, but they are also not that bright. It’s also not really unusual for migratory birds to remain north of their usual range if there’s enough food and the weather is not too harsh.

One of my bird books (but not the other) shows them occasionally wintering along the coast in Virginia, so it isn’t completely insane for them to be as far north as New York in early December. Some of them could survive, especially if they move on before it gets really cold in January/February.
