Sponges are wasteful and get germy so quickly. Instead, might I suggest Swedish dishcloths? They’re machine-washable, and come in many cute designs (if you’re so inclined). Sometimes H&M has them in their home section for cheap.

It sounds like you’re working under the assumption that the relationship was bad, whereas sometimes people just change.
