I am in no way saying that the Parliamentary forms of government are perfect. The parties in a Parliamentary coalition do have the ability to leave the coalition and that leverage gives them power to get real concessions. Not just empty promises. That is an improvement on the U.S. system.

Yes - I can’t say Gompers was wrong when he talked about “Every sail is trimmed to the getting of votes.” You could replace the Democratic party, but whatever you replace it with is pretty much going to cover most or all of the same political ground, because that’s the default state for this system.

The electoral system was poorly designed from the get go and every time it was amended, it was only putting band-aids on. The first version didn’t even have voting which is still not technically a constitutional right, for example.
