I really want to make some kind of joke about the fact that I actually had a black friend named Fred in college, but he was a Republican and became a cop and I don’t feel like there’s anything very funny about that.

I had a (white) yoga teacher who kept calling the one black woman in class “girl” (as in, “you go girl”). I wasn’t sure what to do and I did nothing. Maybe I should have at least brought it to the teacher’s attention after class? But I didn’t want to presume to speak for the other woman.
