I think football is an exception though. There is a conscious effort in how football is marketed to be less regional. The games are nationally televised as opposed to teams selling broadcasting rights to regional tv and radio channels.

Interesting. I’m younger than you but from the same general area (eastern CT but my mom and dad’s families are from Boston and Rhode Island).

So because labor unions originated in the 19th century they are therefore obsolete?

The earliest memory I have of the Titans is that my Uncle Angelo had to stop watching football for a couple years because he bet too much, and him looking at the latest line in the paper and saying “The Titans? Who the fuck are the Titans?”

I agree that this doesn’t get solved without a major cultural shift.

I totally agree.

It’s more that there are girls who still feel it would be “cooler” to be that girl drunk and getting attention at the party, than to be away from such a situation entirely. I know that sounds ridiculous but I can literally recall overheard conversations that basically say as much. Again, I’m dealing with adolescents

I’m a male, late twenties, who works as a middle school teacher in a small, pretty conservative town.

I think there was a this idea latent in the Bernie movement (and I voted for him) that socialism will make all our problems go away. In a way it’s similar to the the Republican notion that having a traditional family and going to church will make all your problems go away.

He comes off as really patronizing. As though no one else in the history of the world has ever been attracted to a woman on the thicker side.

The big TV deal isn’t going to happen.

I think you’re on to something.

The sad thing is I think there’s a place in our culture for fights. There’s something universal about the appeal that gets even non-sports fans excited.

I know Floyd is way worse in terms of actions (he’s a terrible human being), but both of these guys have such obnoxious, unlikable personas.

Many employeers do this and it is ridiculous.

The problem is that we expect visions and narratives from politicians, not actual policies.

This story is incredibly sad and moving.

Which is total BS.
