You don’t owe them a tip. What you’re describing is basically a McDonald’s, and you wouldn’t tip there. If you’re feeling generous, you can toss a buck or two into the jar, but I doubt they actually reasonably expect every patron to do this.

Sorry... you over tipped :-). My usual tip for crap like that is .25 cents. Well, that has happened to me only 2 times that I can recall. Of course being a single diner can be very challenging. But in restaurants that treat me real well, I will most times give a 30% tip.

It’s never pissed me off to reduce the tip, but I have frequently noticed that the server who was practically underfoot my whole meal does take a disproportionately long time to give me a bill and collect payment when I’m done eating and and want to leave. 

Especially when that is potentially negligent homicide.

My standard tip is always around 20%, and I rarely leave less . . . but this weekend I left only 10% and part of me actually feels guilty about it. But part of me thinks it was justified.
