On the one hand, the burglary sentencing was clearly not divorced from the murders he was acquitted for. I thought hate crimes were about motive; this was a group of people who knew each other and hung out together regularly, which is a common enough backstory in cis murder victims to suggest the motive was unrelated.

It may not have been a hate crime. It’s important that hate crimes be taken seriously when they occur, but part of that is acknowledging that a trans person can be murdered for reasons outside their identity status.
