Yeah, you make sense. You're right about keeping the cultural context in mind. I'm sure the US is guilty of trying to legislate certain cultural ideals (in fact, I'm sure the US is guilty of that).

So, I thought being chaste meant not being sexual, but I guess this guy found a way around that.
I see where you're coming from. I wouldn't necessarily be "proud" of this myself, but on the other hand...
There's a different between cultural expectations and legal ones, though. Culturally, I think we (the US specifically) should do a better job of taking care of our elderly, and that includes visiting them. Making that a law, however, seems to do more harm than good. I mean, I wouldn't really want people to be forced…
I was going to say that I couldn't really think of examples of non-party-crazy older women in reality tv. I haven't heard of the two examples you mention. Just in general, lots of reality tv seems to favor Big-Ang-type behavior, though, among older and younger sets of women.
As in, being responsible for the actions they take, or just their general well-being? I've never even thought of that before.
I think a lot of people would probably agree with you. I mean, personally, I don't have a problem with either of my parents and would probably visit them anyway, but it's easy to see how this could be fucking annoying (and possibly traumatizing) for people who don't have great relationships with their parents. One of…
Is this a veiled reference to Obamacare? If so, I certainly don't see the connection. Do you care to elaborate, or are you just anti-government in general?
Um, what if your parents are assholes?
This is a great comment. A+
After clicking through this discussion, it seems that you're asking for more diversity in how older women are depicted, which I'm totally on board with.
To be fair to NavarreEver, I don't think she associates having fun with being in her 20s, I think she associates it with being her age (34). Her statement "trying to act like a 20 something" is referring to your original post.
Ha!
Yeah, totally, BUT it reminds me of that skeleton with no skin but hair and eyeballs. He hosted a show called "Tales from the Crypt" or something.
Oh dear. That little baby eyeball frightens me.
I also grew up in a pretty progressive household, but — like you mention — there were still activities that were strongly gendered. And it was never that my dad walked around thinking that it was my mom's *duty* to be in charge of most domestic stuff, it was just sort of the way things fell into place.
Yeah, that would be the common sense approach.
Hey, that was a very thoughtful response. Thank you for that! My faith in the Jezebel community has been restored.
Yup, those two. And the "Fuck you, Cats" article and the one Lindy West wrote about horses. Lindy seems to be polarizing on this site, but I freaking love her. It was almost a shame to waste these pieces on an "off day."
