I'm totally butting in here because I'm an incurable busybody. I have never proposed to anyone, and none of my straight lady friends have proposed to their boyfriends BUT, just for proposals in general, I always liked the idea of proposing without a ring and then letting that person pick it out themselves. I mean,

When I see red and green, I think of Christmas.

Jezebel roadtrip!

Crimea is beautiful. I can't say that enough.

Thanks so much! I'll definitely use some of those ideas! Unfortunately, I think I'll only be there three days, so my time is limited. My only slight concern is that I only speak Russian, not Ukrainian, and I'm worried I'll offend people there (which is a wayyyy more nationalistic city than where I live).

I totally get what you're saying. The Native voices should carry more weight on this matter. But the general question seems to be, are we allowed to get offended on behalf of other people, and if they're not offended, how much weight should our opinions hold?

In terms of "being closer," I guess I mostly meant that Ukraine is closer than Texas (where I am from) to the Middle East, so that might explain the differences I have seen.

I agree with your last sentence generally, but there were certainly Native people who voiced displeasure on the very article you're linking to, so there's clearly not a consensus (which is not surprising, since Native people don't share a hive mind).

I was wondering whether that was some sort of Italian stereotype that I'd never known before. I'm not Italian at all, so maybe I'm just out of the loop. But I guess you think it's weird, too.

I'm not quite seeing the logic here.

To be fair, "kill" is just part of the game, and you are free to think "eliminate" instead. I don't think anyone is literally going to "fuck," "marry," or "kill" any of these people.

I live in Ukraine and pomegranates are super common and not expensive here. In fact, I'd never had a pomegranate until moving to Ukraine, even though I initially associated Ukraine with potatoes and cabbage, not fresh fruit. Maybe because Ukraine is closer to the Middle East? That and there are a ton of Middle Eastern

My hope is that the trailer ends up not being very representative for the film. Like, maybe they feel they have to draw people in with all that shiny craziness first? We'll see.

Haha, no joke. I want to see some soulful longing, dammit!

Perfect example! Tons of examples like that come to mind. As I've said in other comments, I always remembered the quiet, nuanced moments. As far as I remember, there's only one big blow-out party anyway, maybe a few other ones. Much of the book takes place in the dialogue between characters as they're in libraries,

Yeah, I'm hoping the trailer is simply an in-your-face bid for attention, but Moulin Rouge (the only other movie I've seen by this director) simply makes me question how nuanced this portrayal will be. My impressions of the book have varied as I've read it at different points in my life, but the crazy party atmosphere

WHAT?? Omg DUDE. That sounds amazing! Are you joking?

Not to get all in your face, but I think (naive as it may sound) that truly thoughtful and probing questions can be asked by ANYONE. It's not mutually exclusive for someone to read for entertainment and for education (for lack of a better word). I'm uncomfortable with the idea that there's an elite intellectual class

Yeah, and she primarily deals with multi-millionaires, right? So they're sort of required to at least pretend to like status symbols like that.

The Great Gatsby was the reason I took a Modern American Lit course at university, which was the reason I specialized in Modernist Lit for my MA. I'm sorry, as much as I understand why people want to see this movie (the actors, the costumes, the drama), this trailer underwhelmed me. The book has these beautiful, quiet
