I read the book on a cross-China train journey when it came out. It's a compelling real-life story from the author's grandmother … that is butchered by sentiment, cliche and a structure and conceit that seems to have been devised on the first day of creative writing 101. It read like a hokey seminar on how to make a

I'd like to see Dingoes Ate My Baby play at The Bronze.

Yeah. I'm living over here now and know a fair amount of the language and culture. Stephen Chow's better movies, like God of Cooking and especially The Flirting Scholar are chock full of references and satire on other Chinese culture stuff like plays, novels, folk tales and current affairs of the time that most of us

I'm in my tenth year living in China, I can tell you with certainty that the (Mandarin) coarse word for vagina "bi" 1st tone (pronounced Bee) is everywhere, at all times, in all walks of life.

I love the movie, loved it since the first time I watched it when it came out on the Made in HK VHS label in the UK … but if I'm totally honest with myself it's a classic bait and disappoint B-exploitation movie. That is … it opens with a mind blowing scene of exactly what you what from it, in this case the stylish

I heard that song as a result of watching the movies when they came out. The surprising thing about it is just how soft and heart warming it sounds when it's about 'the tough'.

I think it's a twitter handle of someone who submits categories to Doug Loves Movies. Doug made a point of bringing it up a few times cause they all loved the joke.

Whatever the merits and flaws of the show (I admit to the flaws) this season's reviews have been an embarrassment of hubris fueled "I" reviews that literally finish with the writer telling you in all caps that if you like the show you are wrong. Horrible.

Maybe he's going to go for a 'the town rejects them' arc? Which may lead to the 'town rejects them and so empowers a new lawman' arc. Something like that.

That makes sense, essentially a peer group all getting off on their own superiority (in the case of these reviews).  And also, I don't disagree with a lot of the criticisms, in essence, but the way they are written is just embarrassing to me.

Fair points, but I feel the reviews are way more repetitive and redundant than they make the show out to be. I have mix feelings about the show but there are still many reasons to enjoy it, among which are the central performances. I came to the AV club originally because of the interview Q and A style and how they

Why is it being reviewed then? If it's a fact that it's not good. There are plenty of popular shows and artists with big following that don't appear to have much merit or depth, like NCIS, that don't get picked out for regular review.

Why review the show at all? Reviews now tend to be breathless, personal rants on how bad the show is, with not even a brief nod to impartial critique, as if there may be people out there watching it who do not share the exact same view. It's embarrassing.

I love the show and am thoroughly caught up in its moment. But there's no problem in reading and considering alternative views, it's interesting and worthwhile. Always good to take a step back when you are really excited about something. And certainly no need to get defensive about it.

You are called Purple Aki, how odd. Like me, are you around 40 and from Merseyside, or are you just a genius of finding obscure references for hip avatars. You know he was real and a convicted sex offender, right?

Real controversy should be something called the History Channel doing bible stories.

I'm fine with the more didactic docs but do find myself watching them and thinking that a 10 minute talking head section was all communicated in a good early two minute scene. Maybe it depends on the aim.

Talking within the confines of a CW TV show, this was a good episode because things didn't work out, decisions went wrong and people failed, things seemed to have consequences and elude simple resolutions.

I'd rather he did a follow up to Tromeo and Juliet anyway. Shakespeare is ripe for exploitation versions.
