It’s because the powers that be in NY state politics like it that way, and they particularly like to make it hard for NYC residents to vote. They make primaries especially hard because they don’t want to face challengers.

Also — we do not have machines that allow us to validate what it’s scanning from our ballots either...  oy.

NY has draconian laws because of Tammany Hall and from when people would literally stuff ballot boxes or vote multiple times with disguises on.

As a liberal NPR and Vox are status quo, capitalist/corporate friendly and centrist/slightly-conservative. When someone calls them liberal, I’m just reminded how batshit insane to the right a lot of the population has gone. At this rate Bush Jr. will be considered a liberal within a year or two.
