I don't think any one person is actually saying this, I just think that Watchmen's status among non-comics people as the one comic worth reading while other great works haven't crossed over into the mainstream is disheartening.

I have problems with the hyperbolic canonization of Watchmen more than I do with the work itself. It just gets to me when one book can dominate the conversation about comic books as a storytelling medium most of the time.

I prefer Moore's writing in Swamp Thing and From Hell. The stories told in those books are really creative and weird, while Watchmen is a murder mystery with some twists and turns. I can acknowledge that the craft in terms of comic book writing and pacing between Moore and Gibbons is incredible, but I've never been…

The greatest success of Watchmen is how it used techniques unique to comic books to tell its story, which is really a fairly simple murder mystery at its core. It's also super mired in being a satire of eighties culture that just adapting it as is twenty years later diminishes it.

So much good shit in that movie. I've probably watched it more than any other.

Why as it that all of these HIDDEN MESSAGES interpretations are also kind of lame and boring?
