I would say that a lot of Republicans just Democrats that weren’t cool enough to hang. People like Paul Ryan and John McCain. Many modern Republicans are lefties by the standards of the 70's and 80's. Republican civilians were largely abandoned by their party until Trump came along and hijacked the party.
