The NBA had 10 teams tanking this year! Are you really comfortable with a league where on any given night, less than half the games will feature 2 teams that want to win?

That “oh god, it’s happening again” hush that falls over Cap Centre 2.0 whenever the Lightning score has to get in the heads of their players. I mean there’s got to be a reason the playoffs home ice disadvantage for them, right?
I’m Mr. Plow and I’m here to say / I’m the plowingest guy in the USA
Still remember the first time I woke up in Vegas with a hangover to discover FOOTBALL starts at 10am!
The Louisiana Purchase was a mistake!
Obviously, this is down to the lack of any real salary (or transfer) caps. If you had soccer leagues with relegation and a salary cap, I guarantee you’d see a lot more interest in the league table from 80% of clubs. (And you’d see 20% of clubs forming a Euro-Super-Duper League!)
Tanking — trying to lose — is so contrary to the nature of sport that we don’t even appreciate the problems with it. It’s like asking a fish about water - we don’t even conceive of the dangers because a “sport” in which people don’t try to win isn’t even a sport.
Uhhh, when’s the last time you watched the NBA? 10 teams were tanking and a few others would have been if they hadn’t traded picks. the NBA is the worst because actual tanking (actively trying to lose games) is a thing; in the other 3, you mostly get rebuilding, which means trading good players for picks / youngsters.
Has anyone ever tried women’s pro volleyball in the US? It seems like there are significant fan bases in west coast and midwest universities (east coast not so much, but Penn St.?). I’d also say that women’s volleyball is a bit like women’s tennis, in that the slightly slower version of the game might actually improve…
I know it’s just dumb luck, but if the face of the Nats had been Manny Machado and Adam Jones instead of Zimmerman and Harper, there might be a little more buzz around baseball outside Ward 3.
Yes, it’s hard to read this as anything other than a story about African Americans’ declining interest in baseball, both as players and fans. DC Public Schools can support a thriving basketball and football scene, so if the (african american) powers that be wanted to — if they had enough kids playing — they could find…
Funny, I was thinking it was a good sign that all the guys are good friends with each other, but you’re probably right that in the long run, being a me-first gimme gimme type of guy is probably more important to long-term success in the NBA.
I hate the Sixers and the Process, but like that the gave McConnell a shot. I think the idea was sown when watching old Andre Miller: the realization that a guy whose speed and measurements weren’t very good, but who had great point guard skills, could play a role in the league.
I get that you’re making fun of white guys. But I’m guessing Ilyasova and Saric have seen more gun battles that any “gangstas” on their team.
Tough times for white guys in the league. How do you get your q-score up? Go full tat, like Chris Andersen, you look like a meth dealing kiddy fiddler. Go clean cut, and you you look like a neo-nazi. Big beard and lumberjack hipster has the comic effect of a fat guy in a little coat: “Hey Baynes, how’s your…
Andres Iniesta is my accountant.
Lots of time, big windup, full smack (not a glancing blow) to the noggin. All that gets it very close. I would have voted flagrant 2, but could see it as a 1, so call it a flagrant 1.5 in isolation.
Nate Schmidt goes in goal when Fleury, the back up, and the beer league guy all get hurt; stops 76 shots en route to 1-0 triple OT victory.
Ovechkin beat Crosby. Winnipeg loses at home. Raps lose their last bit of self respect. Canada is the new Washington?
I’m not a big hockey fan, but the “did that guy who’s not really involved in the play and wasn’t called offsides actually have his skate an inch off the ground” call seems like one of the worst ways to ruin the spirit of the sport. Kudos to Albert for putting into words exactly how soul-crushingly 21st century it is…
