Yep. You’re right about console subs. I know ESO was able to get the requirement dropped, and I think non-subs are getting access to some stuff in the MMO-ish realm. I don’t recall if Defiance needs an XBL sub on 360, for example.

The larger point is that very few MMOs operate on a monthly sub anymore. It is the exception to the rule.

Very few MMOs charge a monthly fee anymore. So much so that they’re very much the exception to the rule. However, Destiny requires a monthly sub to XBLGold to play anything more than solo stories on MS consoles; not sure about PS+.
