Thank you so much. This is something I have been seeing for 40 years (less and less these days) and I always wondered what caused it, but it was never an urgent thing to know so I never looked it up. Guess I was waiting for someone to put all the info in one place nice and neat. :)

I bought Sinemia two months ago and it has been great. They basically give you a credit card # to buy each movie with and you just use any of your favorite ticketing apps to buy your ticket. And you don't have to be near the theater - you can reserve a seat/ticket. I love it so far.
