I like this comment. Why does Kamala have to be perfect for this to be inspiring? She is far from perfect, which puts her in the company of exactly every politician ever. Still something to cheer.

Mayors can date governors. Also: dukes and earls, maybe. Jury’s out.

So many past generations have failed us. I’m cautiously optimistic that - as they age into their 30s - today’s older Gen-Z’s and younger millennials will finally stop the cycle of people being attracted to those who are younger than them, older than them, less powerful than them, or more powerful than them.

Extra note. Even as we were baking we wondered about this part:

Has anyone else made this recipe? Curious to know how it turned out since we didn’t fare so well. Our cake looked amazing on top (like Allison’s) but below the peaches it was about an inch of dense, doughy pastry that overwhelms the flavor and texture of the peaches. So now we’re not sure if (a) we made it wrong

It’s a reasonable guess but I think you’re wrong. Deadspin was a solid success back when it ranged wide and deep across the universe of topics that could be covered under the header of Sports. And Sports journalism is a good analog for Food journalism - it can be as trivial or as substantive as writers decide to make

This is quite a bit better than a how-to on making a sundae. The Takeout runs some of the most confusingly lightweight food journalism around, all the moreso given periodic glimpses (like this one) of the staff’s much broader range. What would happen if the site stopped ranking the condiment options at fast-food

I’m 1/2way through TLOU2 (I only get to play late at night when work and family are wrapped up) and I feel like I just hit the main lode of emotion in this game. Having dreams where I’m Ellie most nights. So I’ll be carving out whatever time I can to get back to that grim, compelling story.

Sure thing - I really appreciated your comments! I’m halfway through the game. Just got through a pivotal flashback sequence (don’t want to spoil anything) where two central characters revisit a key location from TLOU 1. I was so moved, and I also noticed how novel it is to have a video game catalyze the thoughts and

This is why I wish the left put less faith in demographics as a way of dividing good people from bad. Cut the intersectionalist pie as fine as you want - narrow it down to just trans black women with disabilities, for example - you’ll still find some people in that group who are fighting for everyone’s human rights

Great mini-review.

But I don’t (get sick). I’m not tryna eat gross old stuff like a fratboy. Not going for last week’s clam pasta. I just don’t throw away food that’s fine.

So glad whenever anyone writes about Shirley Jackson. That recent Haunting of Hill House series was just the latest example of adapters capitalizing on Jackson’s aura without paying anything like due respect or attention to the real tone or content of her brilliant work.

definitely can get mold. but: jam. If you bring your plain syrup to a boil and then steep the aromatics is it really going to spoil that quickly? I can keep leftover meatloaf longer than Clint is hanging onto these syrups.

re:

Weinstein stands accused of raping, not allegedly raping.

What we need is to get all those great molecules together in one delicious Spice Blend that can go onto a new flavor of Doritos.

Two problems with studies showing possible health benefits of things like wine, chocolate, coffee, etc., are (a) that the research is often funded by the industry that produces the commodity being studied, and (b) the media often reports narrow or ambiguous effects as if they were broad and clear.

Off-topic but serious: I know there’s some confusion about this site’s mission: Should you do risky, wide-ranging journalism that touches on food (like pre-zombie Deadspin)? Should you stick to the safe space of ranking Taco Bell Menu Items from Smallest to Largest? But I wish you guys had done one of those

I’d really like to know if the hurdles enumerated here also apply/applied to the food truck the author ran before the brick-and-mortar restaurant. Obviously he made the transition, so I’m sure there were things about operating a truck that he found lacking. But I’d love to know the relative pros and cons of running a
