Actually, research says that the quality of the service is small variable, just like the weather. Most people tip the same amount because it’s expected. There was a podcast on Freakonomics and NPR about it.

Because studies show that young, thin, white, women receive significantly better tips than men, older folk, heavy waiters, black waitstaff. Tipping is arbitrary at best, discriminatory at worst.
