He's so much better than others. His ratings haven't changed _that_much in the last couple years but he's not getting the big lifts from Wednesday or Thursday episodes he was a couple years ago.

They were all off the air for 2 months in 2007-08. Letterman pulled the strings that got late night to return because he owned his production company and could deal with the WGA separately.
