This was a great article, Rich. Joni has always been one of my favorite artists and Blue is hands down one of the best albums ever.

So you’re saying, in the 18 years since this movie was released, the actors have been...maturin’
It’s called “Assistant Manager and Lieutenant,” and it’s mostly about them drafting emails to their respective bosses about why they deserve that big promotion.
I genuinely used to love The AV Club (heck, I was an AV Monitor in elementary school!) because it played at the top of its intelligence and made the readers, who became a family of commenters, really think. Yes, we could be snarky in the comments, but the articles and writers took their journalism seriously and…
I enjoyed it. It’s basically a Star Trek episode, or more accurately, the sort of tale that was the prototype for the original series.
Recasting with younger actors is not a big issue imo. Crowe and Bettany were great in the original Master and Commander, but its been long enough since those performances that the studio can reboot and present a fresh take.
If you stopped it at minute 10, you stopped it right before the first battle started. Tragic if that’s the case. That movie is a masterpiece.
I guess no potential franchise is ever really gone.
the Knives Out cast is so perfect Rian Johnson should reuse them all but have them play different characters. Plummer too. Have his kid/grandkid stand in for him
“Not just women”, I say, crying to myself over my unanswered letters and half-knitted matching sweater
I do hope Johnson actually does what someone suggested. Make Benoit change his accent and no one notices or calls him out on it. Johnson loved the idea and said maybe Benoit would have a totally different accent in every movie.
I wouldn’t say that Monáe can’t act, more that she needs strong direction to work well. I found her plenty good in Hidden Figures, Homecoming and even Antebellum (which isn’t a great movie, but she did well). I’m pretty confident that Johnson can draw out a great performance from her.
What reward do you expect for your post? Seems like you’re signaling something pretty clearly yourself.
Well, you’re wrong. I’m not “virtue signaling” at all. I don’t give a fuck about any reward. Don’t need it. I’m telling people that almost all white guys that are a similar age to me are into young women a little too much for my own comfort level. You can take that or you can shove it just like they can. Your choice!
Vanya was already fairly androgynous so it’s not a massive leap?
I think the biggest problems with the endings is, as you mentioned, the editing. There are too many fade to blacks, slow motions, and triumphant rising scores spread throughout them. These are cues we’ve been taught to recognize as end-of-film techniques, so that when we see them deployed in succession during scenes…
The happy hopping around on the bed can go, and the scouring of the Shire can come back.
TBH i just don’t get the debate and the seemingly accepted idea that it has endingS plural. Almost as if, in this day and age, a film isn’t allowed any story beats after its big action climax. And it is most definitely story - the Hobbits get revered, go home all puffed up, realise they’ve all changed, and that Frodo…
The endings – I get the jokes that are made. But I’d be interested to know what people should be cut. They last for about 20 minutes which, even to a 3 hour 20 minute film, isn’t a huge chunk and especially not for a 9 hour plus story. But I can at least see that the way they’re edited makes them seem like they’re…
No no. You misheard them. They’re the party of LAWN order. That’s why they hold press conferences at places like 4 Seasons Landscaping.
