The Ann Powers essay is great, drawing interesting connections to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. I wish the Crowe interview was not behind the LA Times paywall.
Having just re-read both books, I have two thoughts. The first is not to be too faithful, since the novels are appallingly, casually sexist. The second is that “The Naked Sun” is so prescient about life during the COVID pandemic that it would probably be unwatchable at the moment.
Why do you think it would be “a dumbing down of the movie.”?
It’s definitely in the top tier of Star Trek movies....
What’s the problem? A real adaptation of M&C could be awesome. Crowe and Bettany were great, but there are other actors in the world.
I’m another veteran of the pre-Exodus days. Without picking on anyone in particular, quality of the writing has noticeably declined. On the other hand, firstie culture seems to have mostly disappeared. So you take the good with the bad.

My point is that the GOP will be impeaching future Democratic Presidents no matter what the Democrats do, even if they had refrained from impeaching Trump the first time. Abusing power is the GOP’s MO since at least 1995. Appeasement never works.
Abusing the impeachment power is old hat to the GOP. Before Trump, the only 2 impeachments were for the crime of being a Democratic President facing a Republican Congress.
I believe that the military would like to have super secret space technologies, I just don’t think they are competent to do so. All the evidence suggests that the military is not good at developing weapons systems, even when they are out in the open and subject to scrutiny. Remember “Star Wars”? They spent billions…
There was a story in the Washington Post today about how the ISS is approaching the end of its useful life and there’s no plan yet for replacing it.
