I actually liked that bit though…it took away the final 'excuse' Wade had for being a total shit, by removing the 'tragic backstory' he had been alluding to.

That's one of my fave issues in the run. I've seen the movie, and (no spoilers) it definitely factored into their thinking on this movie.
I second the Joe Kelly recommendations. When I read his run, though, I start with Deadpool: The Circle Chase by Nicieza/Madureira and Deadpool: Sins of the Past by Waid/Churchill, as it sets up a lot.
The 'tragic dimension' actually exists in the comics, most notably in the Joe Kelly run and the present series by Gerry Duggan. So that's from the source material, not an invention of the film.
