You are right! Nightly news used to be a statutory obligation of local channels. Now “news” is really just entertainment where the motivations are to keep you watching at any cost. The attention economy is the secret war... complete with casualties and social disorder.

News exists to either piss you off or make you scared. Nobody needs more than an hour of it a day. I think the downfall of modern civilization started with the rise of the 24hr news channels.

Wasn’t expecting the “declaw the cat!” crowd in here. Though where I am, there are 0 vets that will declaw a cat. It’s illegal.

The number of commenters here defending declawing is truly disturbing. Cats aren’t dogs, their needs are different. Although I wouldn’t trust you around dogs either. 

There are so many alternatives like nail caps or just cutting their nails but you really couldn’t be bothered so you amputated their paws?

And many do - never recovering and having pain in those paws for a lifetime.

Declawing should be illegal. I’m surprised there are still vets who will do it.

Declawing is amputation. Cats are creatures with the same ability to experience pain long after an inhumane and barbaric surgery. 

Then don’t adopt a cat. Declawing is amputation. Would you amputate your own fingertips? Then don’t do it to a cat.

Declawing a cat cuts off part of their paw - to make sure the claw doesn’t grow back. This is the same thing as cutting off the tip of your finger to make sure you don’t regrow your fingernail. It’s not something you do to a beloved pet.

Double-sided tape on any surface you don’t want them scratching. They freaking hate the feel of the tape on their paws. Absolutely give them an alternative scratching surface - baited with catnip for extra encouragement - but deterring with double-sided tape works great.

Counter counter point: declawing does more than take away their defense system. Claws are an integral part of the cat’s foot and removing them is the same as taking the last joint off your fingers. Trimming an indoor cat’s claws is far healthier for them and has the same effect.
