That's definitely one of the all-time scenes in the series. SO intense, and they had me thinking Charlie was a goner.

It's probably safe to say that binge-watching Lost as you did would have impacted how you viewed Kate, as well as the others. I watched it live from the beginning, and while I was never frustrated with any characters (outside of maybe Ana Lucia), I could see why others would be. When I watch it on DVD now, it's…
Walkabout should be a top 10 episode on any Lost fan's list. It's a superb example of what the flashbacks could do for a character, and Terry O'Quinn showcases what made John Locke one of the highlights of Season 1. The big twist at the end was just a sign of what was to come.
Tabula Rasa, being sandwiched between two all-time Lost episodes (the Pilot and Walkabout), doesn't get enough credit for being a strong 3rd hour in a new show. I believe that a lot of fans view it differently in retrospect because it's a Kate episode.
These two episodes were a great continuation of the two-part pilot, and I actually think Tabula Rasa is one of the better Kate hours. To me anyway, definitely her best of Season 1. Walkabout is, of course, an all-time great hour that stacks up against any other show. It almost makes me wish I could forget…
I've been on a similar re-watch, and you nailed all the high points for Part 1.
On Part 2, I would add as a high point, when Jin gave Claire the fish and she felt the baby kicking. This was the first glimpse of the Jin we wanted to see. And Hurley as the early comic relief, helping Jack with the marshal until he…
Agree 100%, griffin, but I feel we're definitely in the minority when it comes to Kate Austen. I always felt like Evangeline Lilly did a good job with the character, and if anything, she improved as the show went on.
Also, if anyone sees this, DarkUFO had a recent poll concerning which actor/actress improved the most…
I can't overstate how much I love these first two hours. Lost was like nothing before it, and I was hooked immediately. The whole opening sequence, from Jack's eye opening up to the arrival of Smokey, is just pure brilliance. I haven't seen any mentions here of the score, which was something I never paid much…
I agree that the island scenes in Hearts and Minds are great, but yeah, the flashback, not one of their best. Still, I gotta give the episode credit for the comic relief of Hurley and Jin. Season 1, good times.
You hit it on the head, matt, I've been eager for Lost Classic reviews ever since I started checking this site. And to have it on Wednesdays, that's perfect. For some reason, it never felt right to me to have it on Tuesdays in the final season.
I was rarely watching ABC before this premiered, and if I hadn't wanted…
Great list…I would change Walkabout to A+ though, and Hearts and Minds is probably the "weakest" episode of the season. I wouldn't give anything in Season 1 less than a B though. Without a doubt, my favorite season of the show.
I was thinking the same thing…but it shouldn't be a big surprise considering how often the show comes up in the many TV Club articles.
