Maybe you're on to something. I have exceptional signal and speed everywhere I go now as compared to my 3GS, it was slow and spotty. I even get 4 bars 3G with downstream of 4mbit/sec when I'm in my basement at work (large metropolitan area, 20-30 feet underground and my building has no AT&T boosters in it).

I've only done that once, maybe I'll have to start doing that instead of intervening around 20-30%

The other night I took my 4S off the charger at 1:00a with the battery at 100% and when I woke up at 3:45a to get ready for work I had 76% left on the battery. The only thing I had running was the native clock app set with 4 alarms to wake me up in 15 minute intervals beginning at 3:05a.
