What’s even more bizarre is, as pointed out by a few folks on Twitter, a few years ago in an interview Paul W. S. Anderson was talking about how this movie was developed specifically with the goal of satisfying the Chinese market, so it’s pretty weird this would wind up in the final film.
Seems like the writer of that bad joke, the director himself Paul Anderson, won’t be making a statement apologizing for it.
It might not be that widespread in wider communities, but as a minority myself, if you heard that as a kid, it’s definitely something that lingers, and can still sting in adulthood.
