My money is that the water pump’s plastic impeller blades have failed. Very, very common in VAG cars.

Also, dial calipers are normally chromed steel enclosed and will last forever. Plastic always finds a way to rot from heat in our brutal Arizona garages. Not to mention the battery issue. Buy once, use a lifetime.
