If the ball was still within the imaginary cylinder of the rim, it would have been considered goaltending. Since the ball never actually got above the rim, it never got into the cylinder, so it’s essentially considered knocking away a rebound on it’s way down.

Except that it is exponentially less impressive to basically touch the rim while swatting away a rebound than it is to go up and stuff a 6'11 player.

And how about Von Miller’s pelvic thrusts after sacks? Or Antonio Brown’s dancing/flipping/face planting into goal posts? Weird that no one says anything about those dances. Or maybe you noticed that the first two people in the entire world to take issue with Cam’s dancing were Titans linebackers... who are black.
