I’d agree with you... except that the entire spotlight is on the safety of athletes and spectators. No one talks about how bad this is for locals.

No thanks.
So, no mention of the millions of Brazilians exposed to the exact same microbes as a part of their daily life?
The worst part is they know they are mediocre and act like they deserve the fame, awards and fortune.
You mean the marketplace which reflects the both white majority in the country and reflects the income of the people able to pay for music? Can’t imagine why it might be slanted in favor of white cultural appropriation...
Not really the point. Very few genres can be said to have been created by one band/performer/composer. Hoyo was strictly speaking on punk’s influences. Of wich Death was a major one. Completely disregarding other african american bands that came after, or even during the same time, that just dont get recognized. And I…
yah but she doesn’t sound like she’s a townie. She sounds like she’s imitating the rhythm of speech associated with African American’s from the south. It’s more than just vowels and consonants.
Chamber music and that god-awful bag pipe. Church hymns? They need to figure it out for themselves and stop thieving.
White Brits (who in migration become Americans, Canadians, Aussies and New Zealanders) have had a long tradition of pillaging the Africanized cultural treasure chest. Things like punk, often described as a white working class genre, have a foundation in the yardie culture of Jamaicans and the accompanying sound of…
As a couple of other commenters mentioned...they don’t *ever* casually cast white-looking people as the terrorists. Somehow, they always manage to forget that Persians/Arabs/Afghanis/etc. can and often do look white for those characters. Strange.
Yeah, I’m tired of arguing with these people.
Sigh. People will always find an excuse for why a white person of Western European descent is an okay—even a better—casting choice, yet somehow they can’t be assed to apply the same reasoning in favor of a non-white, non-European person in the same role. I saw someone the other day explain away the casting of a white…
It’s really odd how people are splitting those kinds of hairs in this case. No, picking someone who is from the next ethnic group over from what Rumi was would not at all be as ridiculous or insulting as picking a European American. Not at all the same thing. Bottom line: Find a guy who is as close as possible to what…
But films with more diverse casts often make more money globally, because those flicks (science fiction, superheroes, animation, the Furious franchise) often have ensembles that can get filled with POC. So, there’s still a (cynical) business case to be made for racial diversity.
That’s worldwide, on a budget of $140m. That’s not a success by any stretch of the imagination.
And look how well that works out for them, what with Gods of Egypt being such a major success thanks to Egyptians almost exclusively being played by white people! Oh wait...that movie actually flopped spectacularly. Never mind then.
They are able to grasp it. They also understand that the only reason studios don’t think they’ll be able to make money off movies with non-white actors is a wider racism in society, and that unless someone puts pressure on the studios to change their casting process, nothing will change.
Yet those same studios will make flop after flop with white casts. If just one of them would take the plunge and start casting POC as themselves, the others will follow. If one movie doesn’t make money, try another one. It’s what they do with white actors all the time with no problem.
What?! They cannot, absolutely cannot, cast a white man as Rumi, or Shams. For fucks sake! The effect those men have had on the spirituality of millions can't be understated. So casting white men is just another big middle finger to, well, everybody. Inventing and resurrecting, so not at all accurate to who Rumi was…
