I really like Zoom Player. I don't know why it gets so little coverage, but its a great player and has alot of features. It supports any media you throw at it and you can re-configure the codecs to your liking (maybe too advanced for beginner users).

People should really give the Nexus 7 or Note 8 first billing at this point over iPads in general — they are every bit as functional and are cheaper to boot — the microSD card slot on the Note 8 combined with the really decent pen input put it over the top in my opinion.
