Knowledge is Power! And power is oppression. And oppression depends on the knowledge which sustains power #foucaultjokes #jokesisinquotationmarks #foucaultisverydepressing
Also, just as an aside, I don't think every single comment section has to become a grad seminar. We are capable of discussing things like human beings without throwing around as many heady examples as possible. You can mention Freire's ideas without telling someone they need to go read it as a precursor to ever being…
Well, and it speaks, too, to the sexism that a lot of young men (regardless of sexuality) exhibit in that they tend to assume that because they have read a few books, it is their job to educate the masses, especially women, who could not possibly go toe to toe with them intellectually. He literally assumed neither of…
Unfortunately for this assclown, this is what I do for my livelihood.
Yeah, he was just throwing it around in a very inexact way like he's the only person who has ever read a goddamn book. Bye, Felicia, indeed.
Yeah, I know, I've read the book. Congratulations on quoting one of the first few paragraphs. Stellar work. What I think you're forgetting (and it's been a few years, so I'll paraphrase) is that Freire discusses the oppressed/oppressor in much the same terms as Hegel's master/slave dialectic, i.e. that the oppresser…
Yeah, I don't think Friere meant pedagogy of the oppressed the way you think he did, but good job on name dropping a theory book.
Not knowing Stonewall? Sheesh. And I complain about people not knowing about The Council on Religion and the Homosexual or the Moral Majority of Hawaii.
I'm just commenting to say that despite being an LGBT supporter, I wasn't familiar with what happened at Stonewall, but thanks to you I went and looked it up and learned something new. I feel bad about my ignorance to this prior to tonight, but I am genuinely glad to have had a chance to learn something new. I knew…
oh god you are 19
Reminds me of this article about the stoners of Colorado not giving a fuck about the election.
we could really use some of those kinds of places here in the south. I know or have known too many LGBTQ kids that are all fucked up inside because they can't get the support they need. Kicked out of their homes, disowned by their families, addicted to drugs to try to help cope with their problems, it's crazy. I…
I would also think that the fact he feels entitled to use blatantly sexist language towards a woman is justified by his being a gay would piss me off if I were another gay man who knew that was some bullshit. I'm a straight lady, so that's pure conjecture, but I would assume (and hope?) that the sexism is as fucking…
Thanks, I just get upset at the fact that my school, UConn, has a freaking Rainbow Center, an actual freaking 2000 sq ft cultural center, with a video screening and full library, and people in my community either don't see a need for it, or haven't heard of it until I mention it.
They just don't make twinks like they used to.
I help out with discussion groups at my university, and I cover topics relating to the LGBT community, including: Healthcare, Kink, Race/Religion, Mental Health, Beauty Standards, and most importantly, LGBT history. I am amazed at how little most Queer people my age don't know about LGBT history.
As a Baby Gay (19 years old), I am freaking astounded by the fact that the gay guys my age don't realize how far we have come, Stonewall, the AIDS epidemic, and how important those were for the movement.
It aggravates the crap out of me when people deflect criticism with stupid shit like "Haters gonna hate!" and "They're just jealous!" and "Why can't people be nice?" Sometimes we are genuinely, objectively bad at certain things, and that's okay. We can acknowledge that we're bad at them, and learn from our failures.…
Nicki killed it. :)
