Chrono Cross is one of my favorite games of the PS1 era, but it’s pretty different than Chrono Trigger. Doesn’t really feel like a direct sequel, and the plots don’t come together much at all until towards the last 3/4 of the game, and even then it’s a little superficial. Still, absolutely love it as a standalone.
