Frankfurt is closer, I believe. The Mercedes museum is more impressive than that of Porsche, but I would advise you to go see both of them. From the front door of the Porsche museum in Stuttgart, you can see where the Porsche assembly line crosses the street (at a height of about 5 stories). Very cool stuff.
