It’s a tricky and sad situation- based on that Polygon article you cited, Gunn had already publicly apologized for this stuff. He directed Guardians afterwards, so everyone involved must or may have thought they were in the clear.

When it comes to Gunns, conservatives just want them fired.

What a weird take...Gunn posted these tweets, Disney fired them. Being angry at the people pointing out the tweets is ludicrous and illogical.

The issue I have with the “young and stupid” defense is that Gunn is 51 years old. Those weren’t the tweets of some edgy early 20's, those were the tweets of a 43-46 year old man. My instinct is to be very upset about the firing and defensive of Gunn, both because I’m a fan of his work and politics and because the motivations behind those involved with digging it all up seem dubious at best.
