I also just read that apparently Margaret had publicly called out the white washing in Dr. Strange before and the whole mutual friend thing, so it isn’t like Tilda pulled her name out of a hat.

Hasn’t Margaret publicly criticized the white washing in Dr. Strange? I also thought they had a mutual friend. It doesn’t seem like she randomly picked her name out of a hat.
This.
Seriously. Googling shit is so much better than actually engaging with and talking to other human beings.
But it wasn’t random, Cho has been talking about this for a long time and bemoaned the lack of discourse about it. So when someone reached out to have that exact conversation she turned it into a comedy bit to shame that person. Great way to encourage the dialogue you say you seek.
“In my mind, yeah. Because Tilda Swinton, who had no relationship with all before this, tapped her as the One Asian Friend and went from “hey, can we talk about this” to “oh wise Asian, please enlighten me as to how we can make the entire world a better place?”
Seriously? What is a white person supposed to do that is better than what Tilda is doing in this, trying to understand the other side of the issue, and trying to figure out how to promote the discussion in a nuanced way?! Stop letting perfect be the enemy of good.
If Swinton came in demanding Cho enlighten her I would 100% agree with your comment; I think burnout from being required to be a cultural ambassador is a very real phenomena that POC experience. But Swinton literally opened with the line: “Tell me to fuck off if you feel like it.” Did their conversation go 100%…
I’ve been reading several responses to this and I am definitely seeing it now. It’s the insidious kind of “I’m a woke white person” stuff that gets in the way of actually making progress.
Yeah, funny enough, that’s exactly how I hoped a conversation like that would go and for some reason it seems like Cho decided to twist it around on the podcast for comedic purposes. Maybe there’s more to it than this, but right now Cho looks very bad.
I don’t have a problem with blasting someone publicly if what you’re saying is honest, but MC’s whole “can you tell them...” thing never happened, and the “I have an Asian friend” was in the context of MC telling her to use her platform to produce Asian content and TS describing an upcoming project that does just…
seriously. she didn’t need to make a statement. she was just like, “here are the fucking emails. have fun.”
OH SHIT! Tilda came with fucking receiptsssssssssss
I agree with you, the character could have been written tastefully and been played by an Asian but there’s still room for racial strains here. China doesn’t like Tibet so they couldn’t hire a Tibetan or risk the movie being banned. You can’t hire a Chinese because of their propensity of trying to remove Tibet from…
They won’t make nearly as many bazillons if it doesn’t play in China. I’m not defending them but let’s not pretend that China wouldn’t have an issue with the Tibetan aspect.
I’m sorry, I’m going to politefully disagree that Marvel was 100% certain that Doctor Strange was going to be a payoff. First and foremost is Marvel’s shying away from anything magical up until this point. The powers of Thor and his Asgardian fellows was explained away as “Advanced Science” because Marvel was…
Sounds like Cho is probably embellishing a little, either that or Tilda Swinton is a humongous dumbass. I’m guessing the truth lies somewhere in between there.
I’ll probably be opening myself up to some abuse here with this opinion, but I’m with you on that one. They were in a tricky situation with the character of The Ancient One to begin with. The original version in the comics was a racial stereotype, it would have been insensitive to use it. Then they had the issue of…
It bears repeating the previous article’s rather pragmatic top post on this whole calamity:
There is a reason that Hollywood makes movies.
