A Big Butt And A Smile

This reminds me a criticism I’ve heard for the former Two Black Queens podcast/show. I totally get it, applies to  both.

My dad came from poverty, and he was a cheapskate even though my parents had plenty of money. He constantly bitched that we kids were spoiled and didn’t appreciate everything he’d done for us. Except we had nothing else to compare our upbringing to? My dad refused to pay for family vacations so we never went anywhere.

I really liked Blackish at first, but slowly I grew uncomfortable with some of the storylines and episodes (I remember there was an ‘only black people believe in God’ episode.) The show is sometimes heavy handed I wondered who the audience was supposed to be - I figured, not people of colour.

That’s what I was getting from the trailer so thanks for confirming.

I’m now glad that I struggled through the first episode and then sped through parts of the last episode to see if my original impression had been mistaken (nope), so that, if nothing else, I could more understandably enjoy this tour de force analysis.

Loved this piece. Just chiming in to point out that translator of Black culture who doesn’t necessarily speak to Black people is a huge niche for Black public intellectuals as well. Adolph Reed can be problematic but his piece critiquing folks like Dyson and Skip Gates is really interesting, along the same lines: https

Thank you for this, Cate. A brilliantly insightful review. You’ve expressed what so many of us would like to say, and laid out the sickness we’re tired of seeing in our TV and movie screens! Barris’s pathetic clawing for white approval and white dollars (another way to gain their approval) is glaring in all of his

I find the interest with what Kenya Barris is doing fascinating.

He wants black audiences to demand better art. Yet he gave Tyler Perry a platform to defend his misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic body of work. Tyler Perry made millions promoting regressive values dressed up as “black Christianity”, thankfully his cool friend with some white cred is happy to help him launder his

Yikes, this was tough medicine. Very fair, very tough.

This show has as much nuance as people who think black people are all rappers with sagging pants.

Those salons, barbershops and other small businesses are going to get sued out of existence if any of their customers or employees get sick. This is such short-sighted thinking.

Die for the rich.

Just because the inbred dumbfuck opens up the state doesn’t mean that you have to go anyplace. Again when the death’s spike and The Hospitals are overwhelmed who in the hell is mouthbreathing, meth head going to blame? Stay indoors people. It ain’t worth it. If you didn’t see the interview between Anderson Cooper and

The artificially-extended post-WWII consumer culture MUST be MAINTAINED, damn it! CHEAP SHIT N’ PICKET FENCES FOR ALL!

Killing Black people’s just a bonus. The real reason why all these Republicans are acting up (even in the Dakotas) is because they don’t want to pay 6 months of unemployment to 15-40% of the population. Corporate welfare and bailouts for the next 6 months are fine. But, the regular unwashed masses? FOH.

Well, if we know one thing, it is that the daughters of over-protective fathers always grow up to do just what their father wants and never ever do things he would not want them to do.

Taking a real roundabout path to say “I feel a sense of personal ownership of the lives of women in a way that does not and will not apply to boys or men. Men and boys are people in a way that women and girls are not.

That’s a lot of words to say “I am a sexist pig.”

Spending hours interrogating every guy that comes over sounds like a great way to ensure his daughters do all their dating in secret.
