There are options other than landlords. Housing co-ops for one. I know plenty of successful housing co-ops in my community, and I have tried to get into them. The wait list is dishearteningly long because they are just that good.

All I can figure is that people are subconsciously using the same playbook they do during a natural disaster. That’s why I’m still genuinely surprised - even given Saudi Arabia’s actions to crash oil prices - that people aren’t lined up at gas stations filling up every receptacle they own.
