No, the designers are receiving the profits from this line, according to the article.

Are these old designs, or current ones? Because from my understanding, one of the things Paul Frank did after this was brought to their attention was go back through their catalog with Native consultants and pull any disrespectful or appropriative (is that a word?) designs.

I know, I love it. Never really liked the Paul Frank monkey but it kinda works there. I think I'm going to buy it.

For what it's worth, apparently Paul Frank the person isn't really associated with Paul Frank the company anymore. I remember when this first happened, he condemned the party and made it clear that he had no control over the company anymore.

I was following this saga since Keene first blogged about the offensive party that started it all, and I have to say that I am truly impressed by Paul Frank. I've made a point of buying some of their clothing because of it even. It's so rare to see this kind of response and I want to support it.

Yeah, I'm not really getting the snark on this one either. I mean, it's a standard Oscar-bait film, but at the same time it's an important story and the movie seems to humanize people suffering from HIV/AIDS, which sadly is still something that is often lacking today.

I think Montana is vying for the "Rapiest State in the US" award. Fucking awful.

Either that, or we acknowledge that POC exist in the real world, but only in urban settings as "thugs" and criminals, so they're totally out-of-place in fantasy settings! Except maybe as villains, I guess. But certainly not as adorable children who befriend the hero, or heroic characters in their own right.

Thank you for linking that. I don't check Groupthink often and I would have missed it.

My first thought, knowing little about the novels, was, "I hope his character has a big part because damn he is attractive."

I like it because I'm surrounded by people who watch Fox News. It's nice to be kept up-to-date about the terrible stuff Fox News does, because then I have ammunition to discredit them when someone I know brings them up in real life. Articles like this save me the trouble of watching the channel on a semi-regular basis.

All blogs must cover all subjects all of the time. Anything else is hypocrisy.

Totally agree. The sexual stuff really didn't even make me blink...the only reason it's "shocking" at all is that it's Miley Cyrus doing it, and I think everyone is still kind of holding onto that Disney image of her. But the actual dancing? Not such a big deal.

That part made me viscerally uncomfortable, and the tiger-striped tights the Black dancer was wearing made it even worse. And to tie it back to what the pinkkittie27 was saying , I do think she shouldn't be slut-shamed for grinding on Thicke...but I'm also having trouble mustering up the energy to defend her for that

What you're missing there is that appropriation is typically done by majority groups to minority ones. For Native Americans, it is mostly white people superficially adopting their traditions without any true respect or understanding. Surely you can see why that is a problem.

Well-said. Naked inverted breastfeeding? Fine by me. But she seems rather fond of cultural appropriation, and that's not so fine.

I totally agree. People are making a big deal about her nudity...but I have bikini bottoms where, if I was positioned like she is, you'd just see a tiny little string across my hips, and they're not even particularly revealing as bikinis go. Is that string so important?

I've seriously never understood the appeal of keeping wild animals as pets. Domesticated cats and dogs can be huge assholes and require a ton of work already, and then you want to go and remove all the benefits of 1000s of years of domestication and get an animal that is bigger and more dangerous, and then live with

I totally agree. It's like those Objectivists who always threaten to "go Galt." Please do, assholes. Let's see how much your money helps you out when you can't spend it on anything, how much time you have to think and invent when you're subsistence farming, etc.

I'm quite glad my last name is not also an English word, because I would find it hard to resist the temptation of giving my kid a cutesy name like that. I don't even know why, because I think those names are awful and feel bad for kids who have them. It's weird.
