The racist part is that we are a people, not a mascot. Whenever a team has a Native mascot, even if the logo mascot isn’t a racist caricature (FSU, Blackhawks), it leads to fans who dress in redface and wear headdresses and other bullshit. It’s never about respect or honor, it’s about people not caring that they are

Yeah, in one of his books he claims a “source” told him that Chelsea Clinton was the result of marital rape... He’s overall pretty tabloid and gross, and pretty obviously makes up shit and attributes it to anonymous sources.

While no one may bat an eye in the UK, we Natives are well aware of Europe’s fetish with dressing up in gross, stereotypical and not at all authentic Indian costumes, and none of us are impressed. We think folks that do it in Europe are just as racist and gross at the people who do it in America.

Her boyfriend’s costume is racist. The racist part of Hillary’s costume is that she’s dressed up as a puritan/colonist, who were responsible for violence and oppression against Native peoples... So paired together, the whole shebang is quite goddamn racist.

Eh, that article was writen by Ed Klein, whose been leading a witch hunt against the Clinton’s since 2005. Not a huge Clinton fan (Bill or Hill) myself, but this dude has published 4 books in a decade all maligning the Clinton’s. When his books are fact-checked, most claims are found to be false. And most of his

Yes, you are right the Standing Rock reservation did not exist as it does today. In that time, it was the Great Sioux reservation.

Well, it’s not that the treaties were never recognized. They were by the government in 1851 and 1868. It’s just that when Native resistance began to be a thorn in the side in the 1870s (Custer & Little Bighorn in the Dakotas, organized Dine and Apache resistances in the SW), the American government decided to say

“but if the pipeline location has been deemed legally available to them and not in violation of any tribe treaties, there’s not a lot that can be done.”

Treaties in 1851 and 1868 grant the land the pipeline is on to the Standing Rock Lakota. The American government has never honored this treaty, or really any other goddamn treaty, and forced the Standing Rock Lakota onto their current reservation after the Battle of Little Bighorn.

As an actual Indian, I have to watch this bullshit every time I turn on my goddamn TV.

“Native Americans have darker skin, appearing reddish.”

Every bit of this comment is making my heart warm <3

Which doesn’t mean much. Yeah, great, Ohio named counties/cities/roads after Native tribes or languages. But in the process of claiming the land and naming these cities, counties, etc, the majority of Ohio’s indigenous peoples were exterminated or displaced to places like Oklahoma.

Blegh. #StopPanderingToOldWhiteMen2016

Again, one friend and 500 poll takers, only a fraction of which identify with a specific tribe, and all of whom are self-identified. This is a terrible poll with crappy methodology.

Because if you’re not part of the group, then you generally don’t have the context of what it’s like to be that group and are unqualified to discuss the importance of things.

Why do non-Natives get to tell Natives what should be priorities over other issues? Why do you assume that this issue goes to the bottom of whatever triage list you are imagining?

How is this a decent survey?

Native here.

You don’t have to be 18 to graduate high school... I was 17 until a month or so into my freshman year of college.
