I read just fine, thank you very much for your condescension there. You’re referring to the non-Natives who bitch and complain, but according to you aren’t doing shit? Well they are doing a hell of a lot more than you are, because non-Native allies bitching and complaining about the Redskins name are helping us inch

Your entire post is bullshit.

Columbusing food is like when Whole Foods declares collard greens the “new kale,” it starts showing up in bougie restaurants at expensive af prices, and think pieces are like “You’d never believe what this new wonder plant” bullshit, when collage greens have been a staple of soul food forever.

How did I not know this existed? Thanks!

Actually, there are three seperate Seminole tribal entities. Only one gets any sort of compensation. The other two, especially the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma, take exception with FSU using their name and likeness.

You can’t force an “honor” onto people who don’t feel honored by what you’re doing.

Both. Always both. Unless you’re Native, and in your own regalia. Which you would never wear that to a Halloween party.

Some Natives are fine with being called Indian, that’s great that they told you that. It’s also fine that a few told you they were ok with Native mascots. I think what you’re seeing here with the controversy is that are are thousands of Natives who are not ok with it.

Yeah, we don’t want to be known as your mascots. It’s killing our children. Who cares that we’re not invisible, when the result is people refusing to see our humanity?

Did that happen in the 90s? I wasn’t aware that people tried to pretend that salsa had never existed pre-1990.

This is just the beginning. End goal for Natives is to eradicate any mention of us as a mascot. Indian, Chief, Brave, etc. Redskins is just the tip of the iceberg.

That’s all you can add to the discussion? Being a condescending asshole?

Good. There is no argument about “tradition”, “honor” or “respect” that any school or major league sports team can make that makes any of this shit ok:

So you literally had an issue with the “people” vs “peoples”? I bet your friends enjoy it when you correct them all the time.

Yeah, I know what a “people” is. I get that you have quibbles about the punctuation. But that’s your takeaway here? That technically, a “people” can’t be raped and captured, so let’s not talk about how Columbus instituted a monetary system using young Native women as currency because it’s not up to snuff with your

Thats.... not what’s happening here? “Columbusing” is pretending to discover something that’s existed for ages. Kara is not saying that eating hummus is appropriation, but that pretending hummus is the new “it” food like it’s been recently discovered is ahistorical and shitty, aka “Columbusing.”

So.... Is your argument that since Columbus didn’t personally capture and rape every single Taino or Lucayan, so he shouldn’t be held responsible for creating the system?

Clarification: White women.

My amazing James Dean-like grandfather, courting my grandmother at age 14. I think this is around 1944.

Definitely Watership Down by Richard Adams. I read it when I was in 5th grade, and it left an incredible impact on me. I’ve reread it so many times over the years, and I take away new things each time. As I’ve grown, new passages, themes and connections jump out to me!
