"'Kay, that didn't happen."
"You bet it didn't."

Exactly, the rules to Stine's worlds are capricious and arbitrary and cruel to the point of tackiness. It doesn't come out of any harmonious worldview or attempt to tie anything together thematically. It comes across not as worldbuilding but a bored author amusing himself by half-assedly torturing his creations. To a

And it should never be challenged or pushed back against in any way, got it

I'm generally skeptical that "the criticism" of something is ever monolithic in nature. A sizeable portion of the criticism toward this movie is sexist in nature, though.

They're REALLY having a hard time believing it.

Nothing drove me crazier than an obvious misunderstanding or a character being humiliated because everyone angrily disbelieved them. Didn't matter whether it was horror or just interpersonal relationships in media. And yeah, the feeling of being the only one around me that was that bothered by it made it so much

The "theatrical, omnipresent anticipation of a shitlord backlash" approach to social media and entertainment articles gets grating sometimes, for sure.

I guess it's unfortunate, but we can probably get over it, I think? I don't mind clarifying where I'm coming from if an upcoming movie doesn't excite me to begin with. I'm not super excited about the new Star Wars because I'm a dumb 'ol Expanded Universe nerd and all my shit has been decanonized. If I just said

Confirmed: Anonymous internet trolls aren't people.

I remember being confused when everyone thought The Sixth Sense's big twist was really shocking and clever, when I knew it was just a ripoff of The Ghost Next Door.

Nope, this is all the stuff that unsettled me as a kid, too. That and the useless authority figures not believing you, or the implications of horrible fates befalling the protagonists in a lot of the twist endings. Maybe my imagination was too good at that age, but a lot of characters seemed to die or become trapped

I missed the part where anyone's criticism was about whether or not other people should be allowed to voice opinions

They really do hate black people and Jewish people, but I'm sure what they hate most is just any form of sincerity.

I actually think that bit is as much a character beat as for the benefit of English-speaking audiences. Karl isn't as smart as Hans and stares uncomprehendingly when he first says it. Maybe he didn't notice McClane was barefoot, but the look he gives is kinda like "Did I hear that right? That makes no sense."

How did I never connect that line with what happens later, after probably a hundred viewings?

It seems really hard to make a bad Die Hard movie, but through hard work and believing in themselves, they've managed it several times now.

This is the one HateSong feature I really wanted to see, because I find the song insipid, it's played with the frequency of Christmas music but all year round, and most of the people who love it are insufferable about it.

A big part of why I don't like this song is because almost everyone who loves it responds like this if they don't see you masturbating when it comes on.

There's a difference between the musical/artistic quality of something and the subjective enjoyment of it, especially on a long scale. I have the same reaction as Casey toward DSB: it's probably a fine enough song on its own, but I don't care, because my experience has been ruined by oversaturation. I dislike it in
