I don’t think it’s as simple as just looking at numbers. Did it make 30 to 40% less than its predecessor? It sure did. But so did every other second film in this series.

Disney didn’t own Marvel, or Marvel Studios, when RDJ was hired. Even still, Favreau had to fight for RDJ’s casting.

Makes sense. There was still a little time before principal photography, and there’s no real reason to rush it if you don’t have to.
