I'm not going to justify the localization but Loran is a valid name (it's a variant of Loren, Lorenzo, Lawrence, and so on). I'm not familiar with the character though, so depending on his background story, etc. it may have been indeed more appropriate to translate his name to Roland, or any other variant of Loren.

If you want to talk about a guy who confused romanization with translation, you should really have a word with this thread's OP:

It could also be romanized as Roran, Rorun, Lorun, or whatever but like I said somewhere else in the thread ロラン (Loran) is NOT a Japanese word. "Mori" however, is.

I know that. I've been using ATOK and IME for about 20 years. My point is that using IME as a reference for romanization is completely meaningless.

You would be right if romanization was done for Japanese speakers. I believe that the goal of romanization is to be easy for non-Japanese speakers (who have no intention of learning Japanese), and with this in mind, most Japanese are terrible at it. I blame Kunrei and poor foreign language skills.

Maybe so, but native Japanese speakers are famously terrible at romanization. A good translator must have very strong writing skills and knowledge of the conventions, grammar, etc. of the target language, particularly if they're working in the entertainment industry (music, films, books, games, etc). I think he meant that transcribing モリブリン as Molblin (instead of Moriburin or Morblin) is a very odd choice which only a non-native speaker would typically make. Off the top of my head I can't think of any Japanese word with a R (ラ変) that is romanized as "L."
