annoyingly, you do have to do quite a bit of the early stages of the Main Quest to get to see the good stuff.

Not at all. Bear in mind, i've not actually completed it mysef, i reckon you could easily do the Main Quest in 20hrs or so. It takes you pretty much across the entire map and back.
