It was actually inspired by Minecraft, and Notch even promoted the game some on his blog and Twitter when it just came out because he liked it.
It’s actually well known that Kotaku is in Blizzards pocket. They’re also banned from Reddit’s WoW section according to one of the mods.

Omg, it would be great if they turned into random goofely themed super villains original to the game with their own costumes and everything. Goofy like Condiment-man, the polkadot guy and the light bulb one. Hope that system starts showing up in new games soon.
