Even once I upgraded my ship with military lasers on all 4 axes and bought an escape pod and the “smart bomb” (which would only damage Thargoid ships, not destroy them), I couldn’t hope to survive more…

You’re not wrong. There were a couple of large open areas in each hall that, as far as I could tell, were just wasted space. No booths, but no traffic walking through them either.
