I'm an engineer myself (a specialist as well!). I agree that generalists aren't always that great for the job market. For your own little projects, it is nice to finish things yourself though.

Where I'm working we're terribly lacking in VFX artists and UI artists for example. Our current lead VFX artist basically holds the studio by the balls because he's completely necessary around here :P
